The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf is the only museum in the world dedicated to the rich history and traditions of the Gulf of America. With more than 80 immersive exhibits and interactives, the Museum has something for maritime lovers of every age. During your visit you can pilot a cargo ship up the Mobile River; dive beneath the surface to explore historic shipwrecks; and step inside a ship’s cargo container. And while you’re here, don’t forget to step out onto one of our balconies to see the Port of Mobile in action!

Take the Helm

This simulator is identical to those used to train professional boat pilots. Visitors will get the chance to navigate a vessel around the Port of Mobile, Mobile Bay and the Tombigbee River. During each show, “captains” will be selected to sit in the driver’s seat, pick a scenario and select their weather conditions. Each guest will then take the controls and test their skills!

Ocean Planet

Gather around this six-foot diameter sphere that displays stunning projections of our amazing “ocean planet.” Utilizing real-time satellite data as well as stunning images and live footage, guests will engage in programs about the Gulf of America, our continent, our planet and beyond.

The Container Ship

As guests enter the Museum, they stand at the base of a towering replica of a container ship. Most of the Museum’s exhibits are housed inside this full-sized container ship. The ship commemorates the development of “containerization,” a revolutionary idea that changed global trade forever.

E.O. Wilson's Field Lab

Step inside E.O. Wilson’s Field Lab to discover the fascinating world of Fire Ants. Fire Ants were unintentionally introduced to the United States when they were brought into the Port of Mobile on a banana boat over 100 years ago. E.O. Wilson dedicated his life to the study of these invasive species.

Discovery Hull

When retired from service, wooden ship hulls sometimes were dragged onto land and converted into warehouses, offices, clubhouses, even hotels. Similarly, Discovery Hull, our focused History floor, is housed in a large, simulated ship hull. Inside, guests will learn about various shipwrecks in the Gulf.

Beneath the Bay

There are more than 2,000 shipwrecks scattered across the bottom of the Gulf of America. “Beneath the Bay,” is a hands-on interactive that gives guests an in-depth look at 100 of these wrecks that were discovered in Mobile Bay.
